Rainer and Jack, friends chatting at a booth in some greasy spoon diner at the corner of Hawthorne and Broadway.
Rainer: "You say you lost your faith, Jack. Yet despite all the shit you see every day, you still hold onto the belief that people are inherently good. What do you call that?"
Jack: "I return the question to you; a man who believes that all people are flawed and weak. Why do you do what you do? Why help them at all?"
A waitress stops at the booth and re-fills their cups. The two men are silent for a long time.
